INSECURITY: Northern Governors, Traditional Rulers Support State Police, and Urge NASS to Expedite Action. May 11, 2025

The 19 Northern governors, in collaboration with the chairpersons of the Northern States Traditional Rulers Council, have called for accelerated action in tackling the region’s security challenges.
The Northern leaders made the call in a six-point communique issued at the end of a meeting at the instance of the Northern Governors’ Forum (NGF), on Saturday in Kaduna.
1. The Forum commends Mr. President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for his sustained commitment to addressing the security challenges and infrastructural deficits in Northern Nigeria.
2. The Forum resolved to liaise with the Nigerian Governors Forum to work out modalities of how to increase support to the Federal Security Agencies.
3. The Forum also resolved to strengthen particular local initiatives in combating all forms of security challenges.
4. The Forum also resolved to urgently set up inter-state platforms to coordinate surveillance on our joint borders.
5. The Forum reiterated its support for the creation of the State Police and called on the National Assembly to expedite action on the enactment of the legal framework for its takeoff.
6. Forum's next meeting will be held on the 30th of August 2025.
MY OPINION ON THE SUBJECT
The security challenges confronting our nation demand more than lip service; they require bold, structural reforms. It’s high time we gave state policing a serious and fair trial.
That is why I fully support the position of the Northern Governors’ Forum and the Northern Traditional Rulers Council on the proposal for State Police. Their endorsement reflects a growing consensus that centralised policing has failed to meet the unique security needs of our diverse regions.
A state-controlled police force, properly regulated and held accountable, could bring law enforcement closer to the people, ensure quicker response to local threats, and foster stronger community trust. The time for delay and doubt is over.
This has been my position since 2012. Let us act.
