Towards a Strategic Self-Defence Policy in Response to Herders-Farmers Conflict. May 06, 2025

In the face of unending violence and lawlessness attributed to armed herders, it is time for a strategic rethink. The traditional model of reactive or retaliatory defence has failed. In today's climate, a preemptive strike must be considered the most effective form of self-defence.
Communities vulnerable to attacks must abandon the outdated practice of waiting to be assaulted before responding. The reality in many parts of Nigeria today is grim: armed banditry and the violent actions of so-called “killer-herders” have become deeply entrenched. This culture of impunity is emboldened by a disturbing narrative—one that suggests Nigeria is their inheritance passed down from Uthman dan Fodio, thus legalising conquest and destruction.
This is not mere speculation. The disregard for law and order among Fulani herdsmen is evident in their actions—and in the glaring absence of justice. How many herders responsible for destruction and death have faced prosecution? The answer speaks volumes.
Though the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association (MACBAN) may project a huge influence in the political system, they do not represent the majority. Nor are they invincible. Nigeria is still worth saving and defending. I will do my part, even if it means doing it alone.
Nigeria’s unity and stability depend on inclusive, justice-driven policies. A national framework that empowers at-risk communities through legal self-defence strategies, robust rural security systems, and equitable enforcement of the law must become a priority.
